Answer #1

1. Calculate Oxytocin infusion at 0800

Step 1:

concentrationpermin volume/hr = concentrationof solution

Ordered dose = 2mU/min

Concentration of oxytocin = 10Units/ 1000mL or 10mU/mL

Step 2:

Calculate the oxytocin infusion rate

2mUmin Volume/hr = 10 mU/mL U/mL x 60

Volume /hr = 12mL/hr.

The nurse begins Oxytocin infusion at a rate of 12mL/hr.

2. Calculate the Oxytocin infusion rate after 2 hours.

Step 1:

Here ordered increase of 2mU every 20 min.

2 hours means = 2 X 60 = 120min.

So at the end of 1 hr -------- 2mU---------- 4mU(20 min) ----------6mU(40min) ----------8mU(60min)

So at the end of 2 hr --------8mU ---------- 10mU(80 min) ---------- 12mU(100 min) ---------14mU(120/min)

Step 2:

After 2 hours, the nurse must infuse 14mU/ min.

14 mUmin Volume/hr = 10 mU/mL* U/mL X 60

Volume /hr = 84mL/hr.

The IV rate of Oxytocin after 2 hours is 84mL/hr.
