In this reaction, an alkene reacts with water in the acid medium to form an alcohol.

alcohol gives broadband for the alcohol functional group at 3200-3400 cm-1.In the reactant, this large, rounded peak for alcohol is not present as the alkene molecule does not give such types of a peak.

Thus, the student would see a large, rounded band at 3200 cm-1 in the product that was not present in the starting material alkene.
