Describe the function of the male reproductive system. What are the organs and associated structures of the male reproductive system?
Reproductive system: It is one of the major important organ system present in human body. Its property of inheriting characters to the next generation makes this system differentiate to other organ system.
Functions of male reproductive system:
To produce, maintain, and transport sperm (the male reproductive cells) and protective fluid (semen)
To discharge sperm within the female reproductive tract during sex
To produce and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system
Organs in male reproductive system:
Penis: This is the male organ used in sexual intercourse. It is a tubular muscular organ becomes filled with blood during arousal, thus making sexual intercourse possible.
Scrotum: This pouch-like sac hangs below the peniis and encases the testes, or testicles.
Testicles: These two oval shaped organs produce sperm cells and testosterone.
Male Reproductive System organs association:
The male reproductive system includes testes, vas deferens, penis, and few other glands. A pair of testes placed in a thick sac called scrotumm is the main reproductive organ. Spermatogenesis occurs in the testes, and because it is heat sensitive, the testis, which is originally formed inside the abdominal cavity during embryogenesis, descends into the external scrotumm by the time the baby is born. In addition, the scrotal skin is also capable of regulating temperature.
The peniis is the male sex organ that is composed of many erective tissues. The shaft is made of corpora cavernosa (which are loose spaces called sinuses, on either side of the urethral canal) and corpus spongiosum (another sinus found almost encircling the urethra). Since these sinuses are richly supplied by blood vessels, the organ grows in size and becomes rigid when it is filled with blood during arousal. The tip of penis, called glans penis, is covered by a thin layer of skin called prepuce.
