The atrioventricular node (AV Node) delays the conduction impulses from atria by approximately 0.09 second because before ventricles start to contract atria should eject the blood to the ventricles and the AV valves should be closed before the ventricular contraction started.

Atria contracts by the impulse generated from the Sinoatrial node(SA node) and the total time needed for atrial contraction are approx 0.1 sec so, AV node delays the impulse from SA node which gives time for the complete contraction of Atria before ventricles start to contract.
