BCG Product/Services matrix is also called BCG growth share matrix. It is quite commonly used in management consulting frameworks to evaluate the strategic position for a company's product and service offerings.

High Question Marks Stars Market Growth Dogs Cash Cows Low Low High Relative Market Share

As shown above in the 2x2 matrix, x axis denotes the relative market share of the product/service in the market (product dominance wrt the competitors) and y axis denotes the market growth. the 4 quadrants or elements are described as follows:

1. Dogs : These are the offerings which have low market growth and low market share and hence, the company should try to get rid of them as soon as possible. These products are in unattractive market as there is low growth and do not contribute much to the company's dominance as well.

2. Cash Cows : These are offerings which should be 'milked' since they have high market share in a low growth market. Hence currently they are cash cows for the company as these offerings are helping in financing the other functions of a company and hence should be milked properly.

3. Question Marks : These offerings are in the high growth market but currently have low market share. Essentially, the market has demand for such products but these require certain investments from the company so as to grow their market share. Hence these lie in the question mark category.

4. Stars: The last and final quadrant here, belongs to the high growth and high market share offering. Aptly , called as stars, since they are market leaders in a high growth market and help the company in earning more revenue.
