Nurse-patient relationship is professional interaction between nurse and patient for the caring and support to the patients for their well being. To achieve this, a nurse must remember the main components, including respect and trust.

There are three important phases of the nurse-patient relationship: orientation phase, working phase and termination phase. In each phase the nurses plays important roles. There is pre-interaction phase also prior to orientation phase.

In pre-interaction phase, a nurse prepare for the actual first interaction with the patient.

In orientation phase, the nurse and patient first meet, the nurses listen the problem and set the goals. The goal of this phase is to build trust and respect between nurse and patient. In this phase nurses identify why the patient is seeking help and what are their goals. This phase ends when the nurse and patient begin to accept each other for the nursing solution. Nurses introduce herself, build trust and rapport and establish a therapeutic environment ensuring safety and privacy. Making agreement and assess the client need, strength and weakness.

In working phase, the nurses collects the data in details from primary and secondary sources and identify the need s of the patients, help the patient to communicate and encourage them. Identify the available support system.

In termination phase, the nurses discusses the termination phase with the patient and encourages to identfiy the progress that the patient has made and explore the necessity of any referral that may be beneficial. This phase bring a therapeutic end to the relationship and evaluate the progress towards goals. Nurses establish procedure for future therapy needs and meeting.. Nurse summarize the complete follow up treatment after termination phase.
