Explain the nursing care required for the suprapubic catheter.

• Supra pubic catheter may be used temporarily or long term to drain the bladder when urethral diversion is needed . For instance ,because of urethral stricture or trauma or after the gynecological surgery or urethral surgery .
• It is inserted percutaneously above the symphysis pubis into the bladder .
• Provide privacy and explain the procedure .
• Perform hand hygiene ,put on clean gloves .tell the patient to lie down .
• Remove the dressing and assess the catheter insertion site for signs and symptoms of infection such a s redness , drainage and skin excoriation .
• Clean the site with sterile cotton tipped applicators and sterile saline .
• Redress the insertion site ,maintaining sterile technique .
• Make sure the catheter is looped and taped securely to the patient abdomen to prevent linking or dislodgement .
• Inspect the catheter for patency  .
• Assess the urine caracteristics .
• Measure urine output every 8 th hourly .
• Document nursing care .
