The circulating nurse has just come to the preoperative area to pick up 18-month-old Henry to take him to the operating room for his ear surgery. Henry took one look at the circulator and began screaming and clinging to his mother.
1. Is Henry’s behavior appropriate for his age group? Why or Why not?
2. Using what you learned previously about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, which of Henry’s needs may not be met when he is taken from his mother by the circulator to go to the operating room?
3. Describe what can be done to prevent hypothermia in the pediatric patient.
1- Yes his behaviour is appropriate for this.
According to Henry's age group in order for a child's safety and security needs to be met, their basic human needs need to first have been met.
2- Maslow's Hierarchy needs which I studied previously I can say the safety needs may not be met when he is taken from his mother.
3- Increasing room temperature in combination with aluminium sheets is one alternative to prevent hypothermia. Use of convective warming device prevents hypothermia during 2 hour surgery in young children even at a or temperature of about 22 degrees Celsius.
