Answer #1

Alternate Hypothesis :   mu_{1} eq mu_{2}

It is known that :- ar{x_{1}}sim N(mu_{1},sigma_{1}^2/n_{1});;;;;;;;ar{x_{2}}sim N(mu_{2},sigma_{2}^2/n_{2})

n1 n2

  n2

Under Null Hypothesis mu_{1}= mu_{2} ; mu_{1}- mu_{2}=0

herefore Under Null Hypothesis ; rac{ar{x_{1}}-ar{x_{2}}}{sqrt{rac{sigma_{1}^2}{n_{1}}+rac{sigma_{2}^2}{n_{2}}}}sim N(0,1)

Thus the standardized test statistic is given by :-

T1 T2 n2

Given :- sigma_{1}=3.4,sigma_{2}=1.6,ar{x_{1}}=15,ar{x_{2}}=17,n_{1}=28,n_{2}=27

z = Observed value of Z

z= rac{15-17}{sqrt{rac{3.4^2}{28}+rac{1.6^2}{27}}}=-2.37

The test is a both-tailed test.

herefore P-value = 2 imes min{ P(Zleqslantz) , P(Zgeqslantz) } = 2 imes min{ P(Zleqslant-2.37) , P(Zgeqslant-2.37) } = 2 imes min{0.009,0.991} = 2imes0.009 = 0.018

[We get the above probabilities from the Standard Normal table]

Level of significance alpha = 0.01

We see that ; p-value > alpha

Thus the proper decision is :-

B. Fail to reject H0. There is not enough evidence at the 1% level of significance to reject the claim.
