Answer-

AFL -CIO Story and its Teamsters.

In the United States , as its humble origins from its industrialization, there were a large number of Labor Unions came into existence and they serve enough for attaining their objective i.e. reasonable & better pay , amenities and working conditions. But, they could not succeed enough due to fragment of unions and division of its work forces, though some of them were dominant.

The Organization which is known as American Federation of Labor (AFL) now have 12.7 million members and it was derived from 56 labor unions by a fusion of a large number of labor unions during the year 1986., however many unions were ceased to exist due to their miniature forms.

In view of the industrialization in USA the apex labor body emphasized particularly on teams rather than rather individual workers in a particular industry / product. We can cite an example, The Amalgamated association of Iron and Steel Workers' inclination to craft union was a ostensible factor in the failure of many unionization drives, similarly the Mine workers began to to advocate for a shift towards industry-wise unionism , where labor union organize all the workers irrespective of their skills but within a single company, industry as a whole or market for that product(s).

the friction between the craft and industrial faction created a crack in the set up of the AFL during the year 1935 at the time of great depression (before the World War II), and to plug with this problem they wanted to relaxation ti the craft union labor.

to keep fit this organization, in the year 1935 8 national level union were formed Committee for Industrialization Organization (CIO) during the year 1935 and in the next year AFL suspended all 10 CIO unions (including the 8 as earlier) and their 4 million labor members, later on in 1938 these suspended unions formed the Congress of Industrial Organization as rival of the assaulter AFL.

Aftermath, during the 2 decades both the AFL and CIO lost their member unions. The first one purged some unions like United Auto and United Rubber who indulged in antithetical purpose and on the other hand it reaffirmed some unions which was suspended by the CIO.

However, by the year 1950 , the disagreement between the craft and industrial workers union was precipitated and some year after the AFL and CIO merged to forming a new entity known as the American Federation of Labor -congress of Industrial Organization, which was known as AFL - CIO. After this unification , the AFL -CIO continued to gain and lose the member unions.

To prevent the hot and cool war between the member unions, and surfacing the corruption over the jurisdiction felt more priority and after hearing by the Senate Select Committee on improper activities in labor and management revealed regarding the dominance of several AFL - CIO unions indulged and supported the organized crimes and the AFL -CIO introduced new rules, that enables removal of Vice Presidents and ejection of labor unions regarded as corrupt one.

The Teamster and a major service employee union SEIU was bolted from the AFL -CIO and the then president John Sweeney labeled a "grievous insult"to labor's rank -and-file , the teamsters union and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) said decided to leave.

Further, excepts few instances of construction industry unions de- affiliation and reinstatement thereof The AFL - CIO was successful to buoy in the labor leadership in USA.

Teamster: The International Brotherhood of Teamster (IBT) is a Labor Union in the United States and Canada formed lately in 1903 by unification of several local and regional locals of Teamsters, now it represents of a large number of Blue Collar and Professional workers both in the public and private sector. The membership count gone 1,3 million in the year 1913. It had a long name i.e. International Brotherhood of Teamsters , Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America. Ostensibly it represents the workers artisans from the grass root level and changed into crisp name including the higher level of employees.

The AFL had helped to form local unions of teamsters since 1887 . In 1998, the AFL organized the Team Drivers' International Union (TIDU) In 1901 , a group of Teamsters in Chicago, Illinois etc. leave from TDIU and formed another namely Teamster National Union.

The Union , after a hot and cold Leaving and rejoining etc, like most unions within the AFL at the time , had largely decentralized structure , with a number of local unions and that governed themselves autonomously and inclined to look their own interest only within their geographical territory. It was also observed that its leaders were able to demand bribes to avoid onset of strikes and control of a teamster local could bring organized crime and other unethical issues.
