Did you know that many drugs and medications work by inhibiting certain enzymes? Based on what you have learned today about competitive and non-competitive enzyme inhibition, try to answer the following question, using your critical thinking: Tagamet and Protonix are drugs commonly used to control stomach acid production and release for patients with heartburn or stomach ulcers. These drugs have different mechanisms of action, however, and Tagamet is a competitive enzyme inhibitor, while Protonix is a non-competitive enzyme inhibitor. Which one of these two drugs, do you think, will have a longer-lasting effect? Explain your answer.

1. Protonix is non competitive enzyme inhibitor, So its action persist for a long period of time. Non competitive enzyme inhibitor change the the enzyme shape and it makes difficult for the attachment of enzymes. It's action doesn't change with the increased number of enzymes. Competitive enzyme inhibitor actually competes with the enzyme due to its similar shape. It can easily attached to enzyme site but it's action may varies with the concentration of enzymes.
