Most important adverse effects of lantus insulin pen ;

1. Rash.

2. Itching/swelling( particularly the face tongue or throat)

3. Severe dizzeness.

Management of lantus insulin pen :

prepare the pen ;

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

2. Pull the cover off the pen.

3. Open an alcohol swab and wipe the rubber tip at top of the pen.

4. Remove the tabbed paper from the outer case of a new single-use needle.

5. Leave the needle in the case. Gently push the end of the needle into the rubber stopper until it stop.

6. When the needle is secure, take off the outer needle cap and place it on the tabletop.

7. Pull off the inner needle cap and throw it in the wastebasket.

Giving the injection :

prime the pen ;

You must prime the pen before you set the dose and inject the insulin. It will done by giving "air shot". This removes the air bubbles and ensure the pen and needle are working properly.

1. Dial 2 units on the dose selector dial by turning it clockwise.

2. Point the needle up. Press the plunger button against the tabletop and push out the 2 units of inaulin. The dose selector dial will return zero if all units were pushed out.

3. If necessary, repeat these steps until a drop or stream of insulin appears at the needle tip.

set your dose :

Turn the dose selector clockwise to set the dose as prescribed by docter.

Inject the insulin :

Injection should be at stomach or top of the thigh. Injection should be done by using 5-p method.

promote safety and enhance comfort based on the adverse effect :

1. Do not take lantus during episodes of low blood sugar or if are allergic to insulin or any of the inactive ingredients in lantus.

2. Donot share needles, insulin pens or syringes with others.

3. Do not re use needles.

Injection areas to avoid ;

Aviod the 2 inch circle around the navel.

Avoid injecting too close to the bony area above the knee.

Always rotate injection sites as inatructed by docters.

Never forced the needle.
