first, what is a cultural group that you belong to or are familiar with? can be gender/ethnic/economic/ based on your address/age group/national origin/sexuality/immigrant status/etc etc, you choose one you are comfortable discussing.

next, based on your knowledge of the group, what is a feature of that group's identity that might create an ethical dilemma for a nurse treating a member of that group? you will need to reflect a bit to predict a kind of situation in which a well meaning nurse might be torn between personal/professional ethics and meeting your needs.

then, how would you advise that nurse to avoid or resolve that kind of situation?

Answer #1

Culture in general is the believes and practices of humans. It differs according to each culture. One such culture is the jehovah's witness. They consider there is a life after death with Jesus to rule the earth and that is possible only to a very limited number of peoples.Their healthcare beliefs are very different. They consider blood to be holy as it was shed by the holy spirit to heal the son of people. So blood transfusion or it's related care are prohibited in them. These type of patient's can be a real challenge to the healthcare professionals to handle in critical situations. For instance a child who has a chronic condition like Thalesemia will be in need of a blood transfusion regularly to be alive. This will be a greater challenge for a nurse to make them accept which is against their belief. Here the nurse faces a problem ethically in their professional to save a life of a child when there are options.Even when in one stage the parents after physician's explanation they acceptw ith a greater dilemma.

The nurse can solve this by thinking very rationally from the side of patient party by counseling and supporting them psychologically that is a part of treatment to save the child.
