Answer #1

Amniocentesis collects cells from the fluid surrounding the fetus in order to prepare a sample of the amniotic fluid (contains liver fetal cells as wellas alpha-fetoprotein) for the prenatal diagnosis of the fetus, generally it is carried out to detect the gender of the baby as well as possible detection of any abnormality, for the example Down syndrome (a chromosomal abnormality), Tay-Sachs syndrome and cystic fibrosis etc

Case Study 12-1 Amniotic fluid was received in the cytogenetics laboratory with a request for chromosomal analysis. The patient was a 40-year-old female with a history of miscarriages. Half of the 10-mL specimen was centrifuged, and the cell pellet was resuspended in methanol fixative. The remaining cells were resuspended in growth medium with phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Two days later, colcemid was added to the cell culture. The cells were harvested in hypotonic saline, fixed in methanol, and spread on slides for...

PGD is used primarily to look for embryos that have an abnormal chromosome that is known from a parent or to look for large chromosome structural abnomalities. True or false ? 3. For PGD, embryonic DNA information can be obtained by removing maetrial from the polar body, an early cleavage stage, or from the outer ring of the blastocyst.
