For a male patient of average build and a limb diameter of 14 cm walking while wearing a patellar tendon bearing prosthesis, would you expect there to be more displacement between the residual limb skin and socket or between the bone and socket?

Prosthesis implant is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part which may b lost due to injury, trauma, road traffic accidents, disease or any condition by birth.

Prosthesis are intended to restore the normal function of missing body part

Parts of prosthesis: socket , pylon, outer cover.

There are shank also which are mainly exoskeleton and endoskeleton. Shank selection will depend upon strength, cost, cosmetic purpose.

• Pylon:- The internal frame or skeleton of a prosthetic limb is called the pylon.

•Socket:- Socket is the part of prosthesis which connects with patient's residual limb or limb stump.

• Socket, pylon , ankle, foot suspension and outer covering for prosthesis.

As limb diameter is given as 14cm then prosthetist have to know all that data and make a prosthesis that is specially designed considering individual requirements of subject.

So there are less chances of displacement.

More displacement can cause instability as a result of with prosthesis may b failure.

Successful application ofp rosthesis will depend upon following factors mainly:

1) Control

2) Weight bearing

3)Acceptance

4) proper tarining by trained medical professional.

Stump length will be kept maximum to increase leverage as a result of which efforts are less to operate prosthesis.

Stump should not be too loose or too tight because both are dangerous for patients .

Loose prosthesis :- is difficult to operate and may cause increased risk of fall and balance or gait problems are there.

Tight stump:- may cause any nerve irritation, any edema, any vascular disease of that part.

Chances of gangrene and infections are also greater in tight prosthesis cases and difficult to wear.
