Vital Signs Discussion

Traditionally, some vital signs, such as pulse and blood pressure, were taken manually. It is not uncommon to see medical facilities use electronic BP cuffs and a pulse oximeter to take the BP and pulse.

Do you think that this is an example where technology is a benefit, or is it better to not trust these important measurements to a machine?

Answer #1

Pulse and Blood pressure are the basic vitals for analysing the overall health of a body. Those are the basic preliminary measures taken by the health practitioner during any health check, hospital visit even during a quick clinic visit.

A normal bp is 120/80 mm of Hg and pulse rate is 72 bts/ minute. Traditionally, a nurse practitioner or a health practitioner, monitor the BP using a stethoscope and a sphygmomanometer. The beets are carefully learned with stethoscope and palpitation and are recorded. Pulses are monitored with the help of fingers feeling the palpitation, thus is recorded over a minute of time.

however, the invention of technologies brought up with the idea of recording and monitoring blood pressure and pulse automatically. This made the process easier in many aspects. for example, the use of electronic monitoring machine made it easier to monitor the vital signs of a patient who is kept under observation. the critically ill patient, a road traffic accident patient, an emergency patient all are those special cases where we need to use an electronic device as an advantage. Placing a bp cuff and pulse oximeter minimises the discomfort the patient with the frequent touch of the health practitioner.

The accuracy of the readings is promised however a slight change may occur from manual reading. when maintained the machine well, with periodic service check, battery life, the accuracy of the reading, service providers, ensure the credibility of using the device.

I think technology has made a great contribution to the health field. When used wisely, the emergence of automatic blood pressure monitoring devices and pulse oximeters has made the life easier even for the common man who is having no knowledge about reading pulse or bp. With the help of technology, they can check their own parameters without a hospital visit, saving time and money.
