Jun-Wei Yu is a 25-year-old man of Chinese heritage with Down syndrome. He lives in a group home supported by personal care workers, employed by a large disability support organisation. Jun-Wei is able to do some of his personal care tasks with prompting. He can shower himself with reminders about proper washing and with assistance to dry his back, feet and hair; he can brush his own teeth, but also needs to be reminded to do this. With assistance, Jun-Wei can select appropriate clothing; he can dress himself but cannot tie shoelaces. He can shave with an electric shaver.

Jun-Wei loves chips and lollies. Staff must plan meals for Jun-Wei and other residents to ensure they are well-nourished. Jun-Wei can peel vegetables and make a sandwich without help. Jun-Wei does not understand the different denominations of money or how much things cost. However, he likes to have money in his pocket to spend at the shops. He can move around independently but cannot catch public transport or walk to places without being accompanied. Sometimes he wanders out of the house or away from his group, thinking he can find his way back when he wants to.

Jun-Wei also suffers from asthma that is sometimes brought on by exercise or stress, and eczema that is sometimes brought on by stress and heat. He has puffers and creams that he must be reminded to use. Those who know Jun-Wei well can understand him when he talks but strangers or those he doesn’t know well find him difficult to understand. This is partly due to him mumbling when he feels shy. Jun-Wei will sometimes hug and stroke people he feels comfortable with or when he is very happy.

This question would like you to research Chinese/Buddhist culture. Do some research using the internet or a library. What kind of effects might Jun-Wei’s cultural heritage have on the way personal care support is provided to him.

The cultural value of a Country influences the psychology and identity of the nation.One of the main cultural value in Chinese culture is "harmony". This value insist the citizens to maintain a good relationship between society and environment, Mind and Body, between communities etc. Moreover the introduction of Buddhism also helped in improving these values in Chinese community. Buddhist culture teaches to treat the disabilities with compassion. Thus formed the personal care support group. So, Jun-Wei will receive a compassionate care from them to lead a better life.

on the other hand,Buddhism claims that every good action will receive positive results and every bad action will receive negative consequences. So they belief that the disabilities are punishments for their bad deeds.In addition, Chinese society had labeled the disabled people as "Disabled garbage people" until recent decades. But, the attitude of society has changed and now they have been labeled as "Disabled sick people". However, the discrimination is still present, which stems from the belief. Such discriminating action may lead to stress full situation in Jun-Wei's life, which may in turn lead to an Asthmatic attack.

While providing care to Jun-Wei, it is important to accompany him all the time. Since he does not understand the different denomination of money, there are chances of him being cheated. And also the carer should note that he is not be subjected to situations that cause stress to him and also no much physical exertion as it might cause a bad asthmatic attack. In addition, some group therapies can be provided to him in order to reduce his shy nature while talking to strange people and the mumbling can be avoided.

In conclusion, Caring for disabled people has both positive and negative impacts as per the cultural heritage. it all depend upon the individual attitude and beliefs. however it is indeed a blessing to serve the sick.
