What is diversity? Why is there a need to study diversity?
Diversity encompasses all the differences that make a thing unique. It includes differences related to race, color, ethnicity, language, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, gender, socio-economic status, age and physical and mental ability. It is mainly used in relation to work culture and environments. There is need to study diversity because it has an impact on the following variables of an individual's life:
a. Productivity - Bringing together people of different backgrounds can lead to generation of new ideas and perspectives. It leads to multiple interpretations and approaches.
b. Growing acceptance - It leads to growing tolerance and increasing acceptance in the society. Diversity can alter the perspectives, facilitate acceptance, and diminish the prejudices and misconceptions that lead to discrimination.
c. It also helps in making the life experience richer and more fruitful.
Thus, studying the above mentioned significance of diversity it becomes vital to study diversity in every day life.
