Question

2. [1pt] Water can be made to oscillate back and forth in a bathtub so that it rises and falls at both ends but remains calm at the center. A picture of this standing water wave is shown below. If this bathtub is 122 cm long and the water oscillates at a frequency of 0.700 Hz, what is the phase speed of the water wave?

Answer #1

Here, wavelength is 2L (where L is length in meters)

therefore,

speed of wave = frequency * wavelength

speed of wave = 0.700 * 2 * 1.22

speed of wave = 1.708 m/s

    5. [5pt] A xylophone (or glockenspiel) is a percussion instru- ment with keys made from metal plates of different lengths. When a key is hit with a mallet, it vibrates with its funda- mental standing wave mode, which determines the frequency of sound produced. Think of the keys as "strings with free ends", because the ends of the metal plates are free to oscillate. Assume that the E-key (1318.5 Hz) is 10.00 cm long and vi- brates at its fundamental...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
