1.Alteration in Health Diagnosis
osteomyelitis is inflammation of bones caused due to any bacteria or organism which entered the bones.
The signs and symptoms are which will help in diagnosis of osteomyelitis are pain or swelling on the bones mostly knee, hip, joints, tibia, fever, fatigue, malise, ulcers or redness at the site.if left untreated osteomyelitis can lead to an amputated limb, spread of infection, septicemia ,and sometimes death .
2.pathophysiology Related to osteomyelitis
Bone is naturally impermeable for organisms only if the integrity of the bone is broken as a result of trauma, surgery,or implants the organism can enter .it can also enter through the hematogenous source when bacteria spreads through the blood stream
Once organism reaches the bone it creates a biofilm and protects the organism from the antimicrobial therapy .
Once organism starts spreading in the bone .the organism can cause fever due to infection, higher White blood cells, weakness,.if the bone Infection enters the blood stream it causes sepsis .
3.Health prevention and health promotion
Osteomyelitis can be prevented by reducing trauma by being careful,by being hygienic,in case of any trauma, cuts or bruises it should be cleaned immediately with an antiseptic.taking an oral prophylaxis of antibiotics can help prevent osteomyelitis.
Health promotion:once diagnosed with osteomyelitis take your antibiotic as per dosage and at timings.do not leave the course half way to prevent resistance.keep the wound clean visit a clinic for daily dressing in a sterile manner.engage in physiotherapy to help in range of motion.
Assessment
4.Risk factors
Risk factors for osteomyelitis are trauma, blood infection, implant surgery, diabetes, immunocompromised patients with neutropenia
5.expected findings
On assessment the client may complain of pain at the joins or bone, swelling redness, ulcer at the site, fever, malaise, weakness, inability to walk ,raised WBC.
6.laboratory test
Complete blood count will help us to find the presence of infection by raised WBC.Culture swab of the pus from ulcer or biopsy tissue will help identify the organism.serum CRP C reactive protein ,lactate will help us to understand the extend of infection.
7.Diagnostic procedure
Imaging like XRay,MRI,CT ,PET scan will help us to identify the extent of bone damage, biopsy of the tissue will help us in identify the organism by culture
8.Safety consideration
Once diagnosed with osteomyelitis care should be taken to prebepr tge spread to other parts of the bone or to blood stream by early antibiotic therapy.
