Answer #1

1. Each unit of packed red blood cells (PRBCs) is expected to raise circulating hemoglobin (HGB) by approximately 1 g/dL. So, the expected posttransfusion hemoglobin will be 9.0 gm/dL.

2. Various reasons for a failure of the patients hemoglobin to increase after transfusion are :-

* on-going bleeding

* the time from the transfusion to the next HB count

* the quantity of blood in each bag

* how long the bagged blood had been stored prior to use

* transfusion reactions
