Answer #1

Touchstone is a standard criterion for determining the quality or genuineness of a thing. For instance, one of the seven wonders of the world, Taj Mahal is a historical monument's touchstone. Any new monument which comes up is compared with Taj Mahal in terms of grandeur and architecture. In the same way, a film producer's touchstone is a movie which has been extremely popular and is well appreciated by the audience.

Volvo has created such a great name and fame in the field of automobiles as safety vehicles, that it is considered to be any automobile's touchstone. If a new vehicle meets or matches the safety requirements of Volvo, it is considered to be extremely successful. They have been considered as touchstone as they have set benchmark in terms of quality and safety standards and every other company tries to match up with the same.

There is a profound impact of such touchstone in terms of testing the standards and genuineness of any product. In a particular industry or segment, such touchstones are considered to be a benchmark which other firms try to follow.
