The answer goes like this.

Consider yourself as the God. You were thinking to create humans and you only had 206 bones to create a human. You started placing various bones to form a little structure. This is what HTML is. Instead of having bones you have various containers like divs, paragraphs, headings to create a website. Here the website is the human you tend to create. You use these "bones" , placing in different orientations to create just the structure of the website.

Now God showed the human structure to other gods and they said "It looks to dull. Why don't you add colors". Similarly, when we create a website using HTML, it is dull. Thus to make it bright and vibrant we use CSS. CSS has various styling features like colors, images etc to bring dull HTML alive.

Why we use HTML and CSS separately is that HTML provides something like classes and ids. Its like we can group certain elements together and style them as a whole. This limits us to be repetitive and making our HTML structure more compact and readable.
