1. Many businesses have moved toward a decentralized organization in which managers at all levels of the organization can make decisions affecting their areas of the business. What kinds of advantages does decentralization offer? What challenges does it present?
2. One of the current trends in organization is flatter organizational structures. What types of businesses do you think benefit most from this type of structure? Do you think a flat structure could work at a very large organization with several thousand employees? Why or why not?
3. Think of an organization that you’re a part of. It could be a workplace, team, or club. Identify Schein’s four key elements in the organization’s structure: common purpose, coordinated effort, division of labor, and hierarchy of authority. If you had to choose one of the common organizational structures for your organization, which would you choose and why?

Decentralized organizations delegate decision-making and operational responsibilities to the managers of each segment of the organization. Organizations often decentralize out of necessity as they expand. The responsibility of one manager, or group of managers, to run the entire organization can become overwhelming as the number of products offered increases.There are many advantages by turning business in to a decentralized organizations.Decentralization make each department responsible for its operational decision making, so the top level management are free to focus on high degree tasks.iIt helps to exist a stronger emphasis on critical business conditions.Decentralization ensures decision-making opportunities to middle level and lower level managers. These opportunities and experiences are crucial in the employee workforce skill building.These will make the managers who are provided with the power to make decisions for their respective departments also have developed strong employee morale and Individual departmental goals, as well as the overall organizational goals, can be achieved with equal importance and significance.

There are some challenges in decentralization of an organization.There could arise a huge communication gap between the different hierarchical levels of the organization.Decentralization can often cause inter-departmental and organizational level conflicts.Many times, the department’s goals delineate from the organizational ultimate goals and objectives.The process of effective control, monitoring, and evaluation of departmental performance may be impossible, this will lead to increase the cost of control considerably.
