A 5.000-mL urine sample has a mass of 5.025 g. If the normal range for the specific gravity of urine is 1.003 to 1.030, would the specific gravity of this urine sample indicate that the patient could have type 2 diabetes?

Answer #1

No, the specific gravity of this urine doesn’t indicate the patient could have type 2 diabetes.

The volume of urine given is 5 ml.

mass of urine is 5.025g

Normal specific gravity of normal urine is in the range 1.003 to 1.030

Specific gravity of given sample of urine is (mass of urine / volume )

which is 5.025 / 5 = 1.005

This falls under normal range.

The specific gravity of urine is supposed to be higher than the normal range for patient to be suspected of being a diabetic. This is due to presence of glucose in urine.

This is a brief explanation. Hope this is helpful. Please feel free to give a like and contact us if you need further detail explanation. Thank you and have a great day.
