Tim A, a 20-year-old college student, collapsed after a 12-mile bike ride during a training course program. He had drunk about 3 gallons of water that he brought with him in a pack, over the course of the ride. During a session that focused on how to dismount a bike, an instructor noticed that Tim appeared ill and was advised to sit down. Tim complained of dizziness, nausea, and later vomited. Other colleagues thought he might have suffered heat stroke and gave him more water to cool him down while he sat out of the exercise. However, Tim James had already consumed so much water initially. An ambulance was called on to rescue another student that hurt himself during the exercise. The paramedics had also noticed that Tim was convulsing and continuing to vomit, so they brought him to the hospital. He later died in the hospital the next day.

  1. What types of symptoms did Tim have in this scenario?
  2. Which organ or tissue seems to have been most affected?
  3. Considering your response to questions 1 and 2, what do you think the immediate cause of death was for Tim ?
