Obesity is a state of being obese due to an excess of body fat. Childhood Obesity has increased alarmingly in recent years in the United States. About 10% of preschool children are in the category of overweight and 1 in 5 children ( school age) are in this category.
Prevention of Childhood Obesity
Childhood Obesity has to be prevented as it is associated with various diseases and complications such as type 2 diabetes, liver disease, joint problems, Sleep apnea, high cholesterol,early puberty,eating disorders etc.
Ways to prevent Childhood Obesity :
* Determine the level of overweight or obesity in the child: Each child has his own individual pattern of growth and body structure. Only a health care professional can determine that the child is in Overweight or level of Obesity.
* Promote healthy eating behaviours : Do not put a child on diet or dietary restrictions without doctor's order as the children are in a stage of growth and development. Instead of that promote healthy behaviour such as:
No meals or snacks during watching a TV or computer (otherwise it may leads to over eating )
Avoid high fat foods, cakes, candies etc. ( occasionally can be given not every day)
* Encourage for healthy lifestyle: Don't focus on the aspect of body weight of the child instead teach them positive and healthy attitude towards different food items.
Encourage regular physical activity ( walks, hikes, swimming etc.) . Participation of family in the these activities also will help the child by arising the interest in Physical activities.
* Promote outdoor games and sports and discourage playing video games and computer or online activities. Sedentary activities should be reduced and physical activity should be increased.
* Exclusive breast feeding for infants. Delay the introduction of sweet liquids and solid food items. Pregnant ladies with Diabetes Mellitus should control the sugar level strictly. Antenatal mothers should avoid smoking, alcoholism etc. can prevent Childhood Obesity.
( Bariatric surgery is restricted only for the late adolescence, who are in high risk group for obesity)
