Happyville Exercise Your job: Estimate the mean number of residents per household in the town of Happyville. There are 100 households, as shown on the accompanying illustration (adapted from Aliaga & Gundersons, Interactive Statistics). Since we dont have the time or resources to go to every one of these households, we will take a small sample of them and use the results to estimate the mean for the entire town. We will be trying out different methods for obtaining our samples, and comparing the results Method #1 : Eyeball /Judgment method Select 10 households that look to you to be representative of the town of Happyville. List the house numbers of the 10 you selected, along with the number of residents, Then calculate the mean number of residents per household for your sample H-hold number No, of residents sample mean Method #2: Convenience sample Often it may be easier to obtain data from a readily accessible subset of subjects from the population. In this case, one may wish to survey the first 10 households (#1-10), or the first 10 on the west side of town (#1, 10, 15, 21, 26, 33, 41, 51, 59, 63), or the last ten households (#91-100).
