Wellness programme for older adults
Old age is the closing period of life span. As people move away from the previous periods of their life, health, job to a retirement , illness and sometimes loneliness , they need the proper care and support to lead a life to the fullest.
A wellness programme for the elderly should have a holistic approach , that should include the measures to improve the wellness of the old age people in the areas of physical, mental, social, spiritual and environmental. Holistic approach view a person as whole, so all the areas of life is given a full attention rather than focusing on one area.
Activities in a wellness programme
For physical wellbeing: Activities for physical wellbeing includes exercises, dancing, yoga for seniors, swimming etc. These activities will help a senior person to maintain body balance and weight and to reduce the issues related to weakness, obeysity, arthritis etc. These activities also give chances to social mingling and to get new friends.
Health education related to proper nutritional intake to be given to the senior people and to their caretakers.
For Mental/ emotional wellbeing:
Actively involving in activities for physical wellbeing helps the old age person to reduce the stress as he engages with some form of activities. Meditation , relaxation techniques, yoga, reading the interested books will also help the senior people to relieve their stress. Encourage the children, grand children and relatives to meet them on a regular basis, it will boost their happiness.
For Social wellbeing
Involving in the group activities makes the old age person to feel that he is in a group and he is not alone. Support groups also plays a role in this. Wellness programme will help them to find the same age people, like minded individuals and to involve them in group activities. Social support system for cancer and dementia patients are also made available fot the people who need it. Encourage group social activities like clearing and cleaning a garden or a park from weeds and waste, visiting any picnic spots also help the senior people to socialise well with others.
spiritual activities: Make available the type of spiritual facilities for the person's interest. Connect them with the near by church group or other religious group. Prayer and other spiritual activities will be having a great effect on them.
Environmental activities; Provide a safe environment to the elderly so that one can ensure the safety of the elderly person. Prevent falls by keeping the side rails in the bathrooms and corridors, make the floor in such way that it should not be slippery. Keep the emergency bells or switches near accessible to the elderly.
