What are your thoughts about J-Pay? Should prisoners have to use this system?
Prisons are locations which are notoriously low-tech. Yet privately owned companies, such as JPay, are encouraging facilities across the country to introduce e-messaging, a primitive type of email that remains isolated from the wider network. Almost half of all state prison systems now have some form of e-messaging: prisoners in 20 states, including Louisiana, have access to JPay's services.
There are numerous companies in the outside world offering free email accounts but inside prisons corporations charge a fee, a sum JPay calls a "stamp" to deliver each post. Each "stamp" only covers one writing tab. So, the more ways in which inmates are excluded from interacting with their families, the better for company. That means stamp by stamp, businesses like JPay — and the prisons that take a commission with every message— profit from alienation from one of the country's most vulnerable groups.
