Researchers at the Women’s Health Collaborative in Washington, DC, have conducted meta-analyses of studies into women’s attitudes about mammograms. Their findings show a trend since 1995 in attitudes. They wonder if generational differences among research samples produced the trend line. To begin research into this possibility, they plan to sample women of different ages, taking care to avoid surveying women who are related or friends. Using random selection with technology of telephone-dialing software, the researchers survey 400 women between 40 and 54 and also 400 women age 55 or older. The researchers acknowledge that a risk in data collection is that respondents will not want to divulge their ages or will give a false age. To counter this possibility, the research assistants follow a protocol to ask, “ What year were you born?” In recording the answer, a space is provided on the data collection sheet to enter the number of seconds it takes a respondent to answer with a year. Respondents who answer with a year that makes them younger than age 40 are thanked for their participant and the survey ends. Respondents age 40 and older then are asked about their attitudes toward mammograms, and are asked to answer with a rating number.
