Professional socialization, on the other hand, is being able to adopt the norms, attitudes, behaviors, skills, roles and values of the profession., In order to be socialized into a profession, one has to internalize the values and norms of the profession in his own behavior and self-concept.
- Examples of barriers to professional socialization included lack of trust from co-workers, lack of educational experiences and decreased sense of belonging m. Entering in a new role can be very difficult. It is hard to establish profession socialization without trust and respect from co-workers. Without trust and respect, individuals entering into their new role can experience isolation and neglect from colleagues. Lack of educational experience can contribute to the development of distrust among co-workers. If co-workers do not believe that the individual is competent, this can cause distrust and lack of respect. Isolation and neglect from co-workers can create a decreased sense of belonging that can result in decreased professional socialization. Individual entering into a new environment may experience hesitancy and nervousness that can result in a change in normal behavioral patterns. These abnormal behavioral patterns may be misinterpreted by co-workers negatively which can result in increased isolation and neglect. On the other hand, a new environment can foster professional socialization. This might give individuals the opportunity needed to transform self, in other words, “start a fresh new chapter”. This can build confidence and reassuran.
