Tommy, a medical laboratory scientist, participated in a humanitarian mission with other medical professionals to South America last summer. He received a peripheral blood specimen from a 20 years old lady complaining sore throat with a presumptive diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. Using the Unopette manual system, he counted a total of 200 WBCs in 4 larger squares of the hemocytometer with a dilution factor of 20. He also performed 100 WBCs differential from the same tube. He found 20 nucleated RBCs, 31 neutrophils, 60 lymphocytes, 6 monocytes, 2 eosinophils, and 1 basophil. In addition, there were 20 large reactive lymphocytes from the 60 lymphocytes counted above.
