Research defined as systematic inquiry of finding new facts and ideas. Though it has various methods of research design for the study the broad approaches used frequently are qualitative and quantitative research.

Qualitative research is a kind of scientific research. It helps researcher in seeking answers to an unknown question,to organize and collect evidence. The common qualitative methods used in research design are focus groups,participant observation and in depth interviews. Open ended questions are used in qualitative method to collect information from the participants. It is not need to collect data from all the participants to get valid findings. Only the needed subset of the population named sample of a population is selected in the given study. The sampling methods used are snowball sampling it is a type of purposive sampling is used for hidden populations where the groups are not readily accessible by the researchers. Quota sampling determines the type of participants in the study based on the given characteristics. Ex) A qualitative study of patients attitudes toward HIV testing in the antenatal setting.

Quantitative research involves in a systematic way of collecting data from the participants and involves in statistical analysis of data. It is mostly conducted in social sciences in which data collection methods like questionnaires,structured tool,closed ended questions,data from internet,libraries,previous research articles,government and non government sources,emails,SMS survey can be used. The sampling methods like simple random sampling,stratified sampling,cluster sampling,systematic sampling can be used. The data collected is organized,analyzed and presented in forms of graphs,tables,bar chart,pie chart. Paired and unpaired test are test used in quantitative research method.ex) A quantitative research study to assess the effectiveness of guided imagery on postoperative pain among patients undergone abdominal surgery in postoperative unit.
