DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE APPROACH

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH QUALITATIVE APPROACH
It is systemic, scientific approach where the data are collected in a numerical form and the conclusion also drawn by using mathematical/ statistical calculation. It is a scientific method where the data collected in a non numerical form (i.e) characteristics or phenomenon.The conclusion also drawn by interpreting the data collected without using mathematical/statistical calculation.
The conclusion can representative of large number of population. The conclusion only represent the small samples among which the data were collected.
Research conducted in a controlled settings Research conducted in a natural settings
Method and tools used for data collection is a standardized one. Eg: use of standardized scale for data collection. using semi structured or unstructured methods for data collection. e.g: open Interview method
It involves study about already known facts. It involves study of new phenomena
It is testing of hypothesis It involves generation of new phenomena or development of existing phenomena
The research starts with clear question. Quantitative research towards find out the answer for question. There is no clear question while starting the research

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Both are scientific method.

Even though most of the quantitative approach used to testing hypothesis. sometimes it can be used to developing or generating new hypothesis.

Likewise sometimes qualitative approach can used to testing already known hypothesis.

THE WAY TO COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER

If quantitative approach used to testing the hypothesis or theory , furtherly the hypothesis/ theory to be developed by using qualitative approach.

If a new theory is drawn or developed through the qualitative approach , that should be tested through the quantitative approach.

To emphasize the research and its conclusion, there is be used mixed approach (i.e : use of both the quantitative and qualitative approach)
