PEM(Protein-energy malnutrition) is a condition characterized by muscle wasting, subcutaneous fat loss, weight loss, edema and frequent infections, which is caused by protein or energy deficiency.

In the acute stage, it causes muscle wasting but if the deficiency persists then it can cause stunting (Severe growth retardation)
