An ongoing theme in public and/or political discussion is Personal Responsibility versus Government intervention. What part of health or other life outcomes is attributable to personal responsibility, and how much can be based on social and environmental factors which could benefit from programs?

To what extent do you think people choose their own health?

What are some ways in which people’s health is affected by factors not of their own choosing-- factors contributing to health disparities?

Answer: The personal responsibility and the Government interventions are two different things which completes each other. The personal responsibility is the particular responsibility of individuals to takecare of themselves. Whereas, in case of government intervention, the government need to intervene about the methods that could be implemented so that there would be reduced health disparities. These are two different things. The personal responsibility includes taking self care such as eating healthy foods, maintaining good hygiene, exercising etc. But the government intervene and look after the facilities such as health policy, better health care organization, awareness among people etc. The government emphasizes in making safe environment for its citizens. The social determinants influences the personal responsibilities such as socioeconomic status, poverty etc. It is important for people to indulge themselves in proper care. People should utilize the benefits of the government's programs and focus on themselves to reduce the health disparities.
