1. a. High levels of bilirubin total and direct bilirubin.

Any diseases in the liver cannot process the bilirubin in the body. Example- hepatitis, liver cirrhosis.

Also may be due to any obstruction- in case of Cancer of pancreas and gall bladder, gall stones.

b. High levels of hemoglobin occurs when our body requires incresed oxygen carrying capacity. In case of COPD, emphysema.

Hemoglobin also increases in kidney tumor, polycythemia e.t.c.

2. When patient's bilirubin level is high, the skin and the white portion of the eyes will start to be yellow and this condition is known as juandice. Because bilirubin is not excreted outside the body. Bilirubin gives yellow colour to the stools.

3. Specimen required is blood sample. Phlebotomist obtain the specimen through venipuncture. Needle is inserted into the vein through skin in arm or hand and small amount of blood is collected in tube.

4. Tubes required

• Bilirubin total and direct-- 3ml green/yellow-top tube( plasma seperator).
• For HGB --3ml lavender top (K2 EDTA) tube.
