The quality and safety of the long term care depend solely on the individual’s actions. But their actions can be influenced by external forces. These external forces can provide guidance and can establish parameters for structures and can set better expectations for outcomes.
The external forces that are influenced by long term care include formal quality oversight mechanism, purchasers of long term care, and the families. Formal oversight mechanism include regulatory oversight, consumer advocacy programs and accreditation. Their relative strength and weakness make them differentiality suited to long term care setting like nursing home, residential care, and home health care.
