CASE STUDY:ANDREW HOCKTOCHEE:FAILURE TO THRIVE

Failure to thrive is defined as inadequate physical growth of a child. It means insufficient weight gain or inappropriate weight loss in pediatric patients.

Certain questions will be asked surrounding this situatiions. They are as follows

* Is there poor sucking for the infant?

* Is there vomitting or diarrhea?

* Does he sleeps too much?

* Does he loses weight or does not gain enough weight?

* Does the infant make eye contact when being held

Nurses can help by tracking certain activities

* How often and how much child eats at each feeding?

* Check output of urine, stool and vomitus.

* Check child's weight every morning before first feeding without diaper and clothes.

* Check child's behavior.

* How infant get along with care givers?

Malnutrition is defined as a condition in which body does not receive enough nutrients for proper function. It may involve calories, protein, carbohydrates,vitamins or minerals.

* Andrew should be given balanced diet.

* He should be fed with fortified foods that contain lots of calories.

* small and frequent feed should be provided.

There are certain ways to make sure baby gets enough breast milk.

* Baby is feeding atleast 8 to 12 times in 24 hours

* Baby is alert when he is awake and ready for feeds.

* Baby has one or two heavy wet nappies in first 48 hours.

* We can see baby swallow while he is feeding.

* We can see baby changes rhythm while sucking and pauses during feeds.

Nurses can help his family by ensuring confidence

* tell them to keep home calm

*Be active with the child in playing

* make family mealtime a special time together
