Name the genus and species of each of these.

  1. On chocolate agar, colonies are small raised, glistening, and gray-white. The bacterial cells are gram-negative and spherical, tending to occur in pairs with adjacent sides flattened. In gram stain preparations made from smears of purulent material, the cells tend to be located intracellularly. Biochemical results are oxidase positive, catalase positive, glucose positive, maltose negative, sucrose negative, lactose negative and beta lactamase positive.

NEISSERIA EXPERIMENT MICROBIOLOGY LAB (Revised March 2016) Background There are two main pathogens in the genus Neisseria: N.gonorrhoeae and N meningitidis, along with many species which are normal flora for mucus membranes like the nasopharynx, vagina, urogenital tract, etc. In order to diagnose gonorrhea in a male, a Gram stain of the urethral discharge should reveal Gram negative diplococci and many white blood cells. This is considered sufficient grounds to treat for gonorrhea. In a female, diagnosis must be based...

On a urine bacteriology culture blood agar plate at 24 hours, over 100,000 small, white colonies are observed. They are catalase positive and a side coagulase test s negative. Your next step is to A) report out over 1000,000 staphylococcus epidermidis/ml of urine B) Perform a Gram stain C) Inoculate a Gram positive urine antibiotic susceptibility battery D) set up a tube E) ask for a repeat culture. Many fungal infections in oral pharyngeal, uro-gential and similar cultures are often...

You are given a mixed culture of two organisms in a small tube of TSB. These two organisms include a Gram-negative strain (your bacterial strain to identify) and a Gram-positive strain (a contaminant). Your first task is to isolate these organisms which will help you identify which Gram-negative strain you are working with. 1) You inoculate two streak plates on TSA media and MacConkey Agar using aseptic technique. For each medium, state whether the medium is selective, differential, or neither and...
