Is there GxE (gene-by-environment interaction) for the effects of sex in humans? Recall that GxE occurs where the effect of a given environmental change depends on an individual's genotype (for example, where a "better" environment is not equally better for all genotypes), or where the effect of a given genetic change depends on an individual's environment (for example, where a "taller" genotype adds a quantitatively different increment to the individual's expected height, depending on its environmental circumstances). In fact, these two different ways of defining GxE are logically the same, because each implies the other. Also, the correct answer is "Yes!" So you'll get at least one point if you just write the opposite of "No!" For the other one to three points, please describe two historically plausible environments in which making the "genetic" change from male to female (substituting an X chromosome for the Y) would produce quantitatively different adult phenotypic changes, because of some difference between those two environments. For example, it's not hard to imagine two different nutritional environments, in one of which the average height difference between men and women is relatively large, and in the other of which it is smaller. That's OK, but perhaps you can come up with something more interesting. In searching for a good scenario, consider some phenotypes other than height in which women do, or might, differ to some degree from men, for reasons that could be modified by the environment. A "plausible" environment can occur in the future, as long as it's a future where today's people might be able to live reasonably "normal" lives. Your story can be silly, if you like, but please let biology (not technology, or fashion) produce the sex-specific phenotypes that are more different in one world than in the other. The "biology" you invoke to generate the phenotypes does not have to be scientifically well-established today. Sci-fi is fine. But please imagine a biology that could turn out to be true. (You may keep the book and film rights to your idea.)
