Pre-eclampsia is a pregnanacy complication characterized by high blood pressure and singns of damage to another organ syatem, most often the liver and kidneys.Pre-eclamsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had been normal.Rarely ,pre-eclamsia develops after delivery of a baby ,a condition known as post partum pre-eclamsia.
The excat cause of pre-eclamsia involves several factors ,it beging in the placenta (the organ that nourshies the fetus throught the prgnancy). In pregnancy ,new blood vessels develop and evolve to effiently send blood to placenta. In women with pre-eclampsia ,these blood vessels don't seem to develop or fuction properly. They are narrower than normal blood vessels and react differently to hormonal signaling ,which limits the amount of blood that can flow through them.Causes of this abnormal development may include ,insufficient bloodflow to the uterus,Damage to the blood vessels,A problem with the immune system and certain genes.
The main signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia may include, elevated blood pressure,Excess protein in urine (proteinuria)or additional signs of kidney problems, sever headaches, changes in vision including temporary loss of vision, blurred vision or light sensityvity ,upper abdominal pain usually under ribs on the right side, nausea or vomiting, decreased urine output ,thrombocytopenia, impaired liver function and shortness of breath caused by fluid in lungs.
