1. The correlation coefficient r is a statistical tool that measures the degree of linear relationship between two variables. It ranges from -1 to 1 with 1 being perfect positive correlation between the variables. The scatterplot shows a clear relationship between x and y, however r=0. This is possible because while r=0 implies no LINEAR correlation between the two variables, there is always a possibility of non-linear correlation between the variables as shown in the scatterplot above.
