Answer #1

The stigma associated with physical illness and mental illness are similar in some way. Some of the similarities are mentioned below:

1. A person suffering from a any kind of illness is always reluctant to accept that he/she is suffering from some kind of illness. This is true for physical illness as well as mental illness.

2. Being ill is perceived as a burden to the family.

3. The fact that mental illness and physical illness are interlinked are not known to most of the people. Even many health service providers are ignorant of this fact. In fact it is seen that people with mental illness are more likely to be at risk for other physical illnesses.

4. Most people tend to ignore their health problems ( mental as well as physical ) at the early stage.

Even though there are similarities as mentioned above, there are also some differences associated with the stigma of a physical illness and mental illness. Some of the differences are:

1. Mental illness is not easily accepted by the society, hence family or relatives of a mentally ill person tend to hide the problem from the society, but this is not so in case of physical illness. Physical illnesses are well accepted by the society.

2. Treatment for a physically ill person is easily sought, whereas a mentally ill may not access treatment as easily.

3. Even at a minor stage a physical illness can be identified, whereas a mental illness is usually neglected at the early stage. Treatment is sought only when the person starts showing severe behavioral conditions.

4. Stigma attached to mental illness leads to discrimination of mentally ill people in the society, but this is not seen in case of physical illness.

5. In many countries, mental illness is still associated with possession by a demon or spirit due to lack of knowledge on mental health, whereas people can easily identify a physical health related problem and seek service.
