1. Critical thinking means the objective analysis of facts to create a judgement . It can be defined as the process of actively and skillfully interpreting, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating facts or the information to conclude with a satisfiying answer. It is purely a self directed , self motivated , self disciplined and self monitored process to make a valid inference.

Importance of critical thinking in nursing

Critical thinking skills are as important as clinical skills in the field of nursing . In nursing critical thinking is used to make key decisions by prioritizing the problems and need of the patient as well as the ethical , managerial and administrative decisions are also based on the critical thinking skill. Nurses use this skill of critical thinking while caring the patient 24/7 , for making policy decisions and it really mean the difference between someone living or dying. To become a successful nurse they should think critically and act accordingly. Standard protocols will work 99% of the time but the time when it won't work , the critical thinking skill of a nurse can either save or cost a life.

Critical thinkers in nursing should be precise, logical , complete , clear , accurate and fair . Some of the critical thinking skills a nurse requires includes :

Interpretation , analysis and evaluation . This skills can be used by the nurse to determine the situation an decide on explanation and self regulation.

2. Types of reasoning based on critical thinking

The main three types of reasoning based on critical thinking are as follows:

A. Inductive reasoning - It is a type of reasoning which is exploratory in nature and it seems theories to explain observations. It is a kind of down to up logic and give uncertain but likely results.

B. Deductive reasoning - It is a formal method of top to bottom logic which requires observation to prove a theory. It basically uses the formal logic and produces logically certain results.

C. Abductive reasoning - It is a less rigorous and best guessing method which typically suits at the time of uncertainty. This type also seeks theories to explain observation and mainly associated with decision making and troubleshooting.

3. Comparison of inductive and deductive reasoning.

Inductive reasoning starts with a conclusion .Where as deductive reasoning starts with a premise to develop a true and valid conclusion. Inductive moves from specific instances to general conclusion where as deductive moves from generalized principles that are already known to a specific conclusion. Inductive is a cause and effect reasoning or bottom to top because it tries to prove the conclusion which is already made. So it goes from the bottom to the top. In deductive , it is top to bottom because it goes from general and works down to specific to reach conclusion.

Inductive reasoning is a process of making generalizations based on observed data , pattern and past performance . When it comes in critical thinking it is an informal logic also called as everyday arguments which involves drawing uncertain inference to reach conclusions that are probable , reasonable , plausible and believable.

Deductive reasoning is the process of demonstrating that the validity of certain statements can imply the validity of statements that follow. It means a sort of valid arguments which is more reasonable and the premises are true. In this they make broad generalizations and come to specific conclusions. In critical thinking , deductive reasoning has two faces , law of detachment and law of syllogism. Law of detachment says if the first part of statement is true , then the rest of the statement and the conclusion made must be true. And law of syllogism says that two statements no matter true or false , is accepted and understood. And conclusions made also will be accepted.

4. Diagnostic reasoning involves the skill of a physician as well as health care team and clinical skill is preferred. It requires a keen observation and conclusion but based on the clinical significance rather than critical thinking. Critical thinking can be used to interpret but not to conclude.
