A 10-year old female experienced one cold after another in the springtime. She had missed a number of days of school, and her mother took her daughter to the pediatrician and was concerned that her daughter might be immuno-compromised because she couldn’t seem to fight off infections. A blood sample was obtained and sent to a reference laboratory for a determination of antibody levels.

The patient’s IgM, IgG, and IgA levels were all normal for her age, but the IgE level was greatly increased.

Question:

What does this indicate about the patient’s state of health? Be descriptive in your answer. (6 points)

Answer #1

* The IgE is the are normally found in the blood which is a marker for the diseases.

* these are made by the immune system to protect body from the bacteria, virus and other allergens.

* the higher amount can be seen as a sign of body over reacting to the allergens which leads to the allergic reaction.

* this can also be increased when the body is fighting against infection from a parasite or with any immune conditions.

* if the individual is having high IgE than he is at risk of food or environmental allergies.

* this may be also high in patients with allergic reaction, asthma, atopic dermatitis and some type of cancer.
