  • Enzymes functions best at optimal pH (around 7). When pH is low (acidic) or high (alkaline) then activity of enzymes decreases
  • Body function bet at neutral pH because most of cellular activity and enzymatic function occurs at this pH. When pH changes then compensatory mechanisms are activated to bring pH to normal (homeostasis)
  • Microbs are cell so they also grow at normal neutral pH (although there are some exception like extremophiles, acidophiles which grow at extremes of pH)
