ane has always been very cautious using correct PPE and safety devices when drawing blood. She sticks herself during a blood draw and is wondering if she should report it. Jane has never done this before and must undergo postexposure management of this needlestick injury. She asks you for your opinion. What would you tell her? Should she report it or not? What are the steps for postexposure management?

The first thing that I would tell her is don't be panic just be relaxed.

Yes, Jane should report it to an authorized person ( safety officer, supervisor) and fill an accident report form, as there are chances to develop various ill effects( blood born diseases) if not treated properly.

Post-exposure management: this minimize the risk of infection.

• immediately after the injury rinse the site with water and soap, do not scrub just wash.
• do not use any antiseptic solutions such as betadine and bleach.
• do not suck the wound.
• assess the exposure for the type of fluid, needle and the blood.
• screen the exposure source for an infection such as HIV and HCV.
