Answer #1

DALY: Disability Adjusted Life Year Defined as the sum of years of potential life lost due to premature death , and the year of productive life lost due to disability. DALY is used to measure the combined quantity and quality of life of a population.

one DALY can be thought of as one lost year of healthy life .

CALCULATION : this measurement is a combination of two measurements

DALY =YLL+YLD

ie. Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY) is equal to the sum of the tears of life lost (YLL) due to premature mortality in the population and the years lost due ton disability(YLD) for people living with the health condition.

Years Of Life Lost(YLL)

This consists of the number of deaths multiplied by the standard life expectancy at the age at which death occurs.

FORMULA YLL=N *L

N=number of deaths

L=standard life expectancy at age death

Year Living With a Disability(YLD)

Two methods of calculating YLD

1.The number of cases in a particular time period , multiplied by the average duration of the disease combined with a weight factor which represents the severity of the disease on a scale from 0 to 1.

the formula is :YLD=I *DW *L

  • I=number of incident cases
  • DW=disability weight
  • L=average duration of the case until remission or death( in years).

2.Prevalence YLD:YLD =P=DW

P=Number of prevalent cases

DW=disability weight

CALCULATION

female patient develops a moderate depressive episode at age =50

life expectancy of women at birth =85

DW=0.35

patient consequently dies at =70

DALY=YLL+YLD

Years lived with diseas20 YLD

life expectancy at age of premature death=19.42

contribution of YLLs=8.08

contribution of YLDs=2.18

total DALYs=10.26
